Swansea Veterans’ Hub (SVH) is a Community Interest Company (CIC), a not-for-profit organisation with everything they do being on an unpaid voluntary basis. This ‘Drop-In-Hub’ operates in partnership with several local organisations to provide mental health and wellbeing support and signposting for veterans and their families too.
SVH is a social and support group which aims to bring veterans out of isolation and make new friends. As well as offering support and activities, they link up with other local and national organisations to ensure their members can access the services they need.
With the support of Ospreys in the Community and Swansea City AFC Foundation, SVH has the use of a room at St Helens Rugby and Cricket Ground. They open every Tuesday from 10 am to 1pm and every Saturday from 10 am to 12 middays, where all veterans and their families can come together in a safe environment.
They offer support for financial difficulties (including PIP and DWP issues), employment, housing, health, and wellbeing issues. Their volunteers are all fully trained in mental health, first aid and safeguarding. They have full governance and are members of the Association of Service Drop-in Centres (ASDIC). In addition, they are a registered Safe, Warm Space with Swansea Council.
They are incredibly fortunate to have 24/7 access to Jack’s Retreat, where veterans and their families, or those who are serving/reservists, can access wild camping, woodland walks, bush crafting, stargazing, and other family orientated activities.
SVH helps raise awareness amongst other organisations and the public, to highlight the problems affecting veterans with mental health issues and how they can all help. Demand for their services has grown significantly and they continue to extend their range of support networks for veterans and their families to help them with any difficulties they may encounter from the transition from military to civilian life and beyond.
SVH fully embrace and are signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant to help ensure that those who serve or have served in the armed forces and their families are all treated fairly. They are one of the few places in Swansea to offer face-to-face interactions for both veterans and their families.
As with all organisation such as Swansea Veterans Hub, they rely heavily on fundraisers and donations, with every penny being raised going towards veterans to ensure they receive the support they need and deserve.
